Treehouse Design: Crafting Homes for Life

Architectural Design Services

We believe that the design process should be a collaborative effort between designer and homeowner.  By carefully listening to our clients, we are able to develop a program that not only addresses their needs, but also translates their vision into a recognizable design.  To do that, we use a number of tools, from drawings to cardboard models to 3D renderings.

In new construction, as well as in renovations, the house must be designed to fit the property.  In order to understand the complex relationship between a building and the land it will occupy, we begin by walking the property, noting the light, trees, rocks, and other interesting natural features.

In a typical project, the design process is distinguished by three phases:

Phase I  - Preliminary Design
A critical first step is to study permitting issues that may have an impact on the project (Conservation Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals, etc.). Treehouse Design has extensive experience in this sensitive area.

The next step is to measure and draw the existing conditions of the existing building (or the building site for new construction).  Working with the homeowner, we will produce multiple design options to be presented and discussed at a series of meetings.  The goal is to create a design that best serves our clients needs, captures their vision, and respects financial considerations.

Phase IIDesign Development
The purpose of this phase of the design process is to prepare a preliminary construction budget, to make sure that their “dream home” is not just a dream, to refine and finalize the design, and, if necessary, to present a finalized design to the local zoning board or conservation commission.

Phase III – Construction Documents
The final step of the design process is the preparation of full construction documentation and specifications appropriate for competitive bidding and obtaining a building permit.
